About Kalaayan Academy

Kalaayan is an 'Art Initiative' with an agenda of propagating classical dance style.Kalaayan was initiated on 4th March 2019 by Rama Ajay Kuknur, a Bharatnatyam dance exponent and disciple of Dr.Sucheta Chapekar. The purpose of this initiative was to preach a Bharatnatyam style. Kalaayan has created unique dance-based productions which shines a light on different subjects other than the traditional classical ones. Giving classical dancing style a different outlook and making it more and more relatable. In this process, interdisciplinary art forms also play an important role. We intend to create productions influenced by other art forms (such as painting and dance, sculpture and dance). Making classical style more interesting, contemporary and an easy way of communication. In the end, what is dance but an excellent medium of expression and Kalaayan tries to do it to its best !!

Rama Kuknur

Rama Ajay Kuknur has been learning dance under the able guidance of Guru, scholar, researcher, guide, exponent and world-renowned Dancer Dr. Sucheta Bhide-Chapekar in Kalavardhini Institution. Since the tender age of 7, Rama today has flowered into a young accomplished exponent. She is a Gold medallist in Bharatnatyam in the M.A course in Dance from Lalit Kala Kendra ( Gurukul ), S.P. Pune University.

Rama's dance is marked for graceful and precise Nritta as well as eloquent Abhinaya with which she is able to form an immediate rapport with her audiences. She also has equal command on the NrityaGanga Bani ( synthesis of Bharatnatyam and Hindustani classical). Since her first stage appearance in 2007, she has given solo presentations in Pune on a number of occasions and has also performed in Aurangabad, Nasik, and Mumbai. She has accompanied Dr.Sucheta Chapekar in various Dance performances. The most noteworthy among them is her participation in 'Sawai Gandharva' Music Festival 2015 along with her Guru which won her many accolades.

Mahabharata is a text known for its layers and complexity of the characters which it has. On the other hand, the female characters except Draupadi are hardly seen explored in the text. All these are strong women, mothers, wives of warriors, and warriors themselves. Mahabharatee is a book written by Shruti Hajirnis-Gupte which puts light on these women characters and this production Mahabharatee portrays these women who have held court a day before the war.
